A message from
Nancy Ware Haberland....My
swimming days were quite numbered -- Butch called me "Speedy" because I was so
slow. He told me he had never seen anyone go that slowly. He had such a way
with words. Butch spent half his life at our house. We all adored him. He
would come over on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas morning when dad carved the
turkey. He sat there waiting for dad to get that turkey sliced. He never
knew anyone carved a turkey other than at the actual dining room table. So,
while dad was carving, Butch was sneaking bites. We loved him dearly.
There are NO pictures of me swimming! On one
occasion, Butch entered me in a swimming meet in Ft. Wayne. It was 10
lengths. I just about cried. 10 lengths for me was like -- well, it might as
well have been 2 miles -- Oh my. There were only two of us swimming. Does
that make it worse -- oh yes! I was so angry with him that I thought I would
show him -- so, as I was finishing up my last 5 lengths of the pool (my
opponent having been down after my first two lengths), I waved to him as I was
going by. He nearly died -- the crowed thought it was great. They all
started screaming for me to go faster. Right! So much for my humiliating
him! Needless to say, I quit the team. Tennis was my game and still is.
Steve is elated you are putting this together --
me too. We all have our own wonderful memories. I can still hear mother and
dad talking about your father and what a great coach he was. Steve was so
fortunate to have been a part of your family's life as well. We all are!
