JOHN WEINBRECHT
I swam for Rivi from 1956-1966, followed by four years on the Indiana State University (ISU) swim team. Immediately following graduation, I moved from the water to the deck. While attending graduate school I served as ISU's assistant varsity coach, and coach of the ISU/Terre Haute age group program. Following ISU, I spent one year teaching/coaching swimming at the high school level. I realized early-on, however, that I didn't enjoy coaching swimming as much as I enjoyed swimming. So, I went back to school for business and spent the next 30 or so years on the east and west coasts (NYC, NJ, NH, MA, and CA) managing HR and labor relations in banking, airlines, and high-tech manufacturing, with several stints in city and state government.
For the first 20+ years I was pretty much 'married" to my work. In 1993, however, I was lucky enough to meet and marry Alexandria (Alex), the 'girl of my dreams.' My best man was, of course, a fellow Rivi Swim Team alum, John Diercks. Although an excellent swimmer, Alex is, at heart, an equestrian. She lives/breathes horses. In January of 2001, I retired from Silicon Valley and Alex and I re-located to our favorite city, Portland, OR. I'm now dabbling in government again, and getting involved in some civic development projects. And, most importantly, getting in my daily workouts with the Portland Masters (If you're passing through and need a pool, the Portland Metro Y is great--lap swimming all day). Now that I have more time, I'm planning to swim in some Masters meets.
Who knows, maybe I'll run into
some of my 'old' Rivi pals during one of my yearly visits to Indianapolis, which
always includes a summer (when else?) pilgrimage to Rivi (I caught up with Rivi
mainstay Eva Berglund a couple of summers ago). For me personally, Rivi is a
time capsule. It's one of those rare places where time seems magically
suspended. Walking down that hallway towards the pool now, everything looks the
same...sounds the same...smells of chlorine the same as it did the first day I
ever walked in the place some 45 (gulp) years ago to meet Johnny for the first
time. To this day, when I'm sitting at the picnic tables having a burger and
looking out over the pool, I can 'see' Johnny pacing the side of the pool with
his stopwatch.
